History

Foster.RichmondBaseballThe History of Baseball on The Boulevard stretches back generations.  The first Richmond teams formed as early as 1895, with the Blue Birds, then as the Colts until 1953.  From 1954 through 1955, The Richmond Virginians Played at Parker Field.  From 1956 through 1964 The Yankees farm team, again The Virginians, occupied the stadium.  And finally, from 1966 to 2008 the Richmond Braves, first as a farm team affiliated with the Montreal Expos and then The Atlanta Braves, played on The Boulevard.

This corner has served Richmonders well over the years. Its easy access to Interstates 95 and 64 have made it a great location for all persons living in the Greater Metropolitan area to come to a ballgame with their family and leave with great memories without getting stuck in traffic forever.
richmndIn the early part of this century, the Atlanta Braves began to grouse, correctly, that they needed a new ballpark. Global Development, a developer from Washington D.C. pitched a ballpark project in Shockoe Bottom. The financing of the complex was questionable and never really gained any traction. The plan to build a new park on The Boulevard was then pitched and The Braves organization supported it. They indeed agreed to put capitol into the deal. The benefits to the businesses on The Boulevard would have been enormous, but eventually, disagreements between the Wilder administration and The Braves led to a breakdown of the deal structure and The Richmond Braves played their last game there in 2008. They relocated to Gwinett Georgia.
